<\/a><\/a>\"Final<\/a>You must have a story to tell\u00a0 to win Eurovision Song Contest, I am more and more sure about this. Alexander Rybak<\/a> from Norway won with 387 points with his song Fairytale<\/a>, better result than ever. His comment to his victory was:\u00a0 I am not the best singer\u00a0in the competition. I won because I have a story to tell.\u00a0 I think people like my story<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The Swedish song La voix <\/a>with Malena Ernman<\/a> became 21st. Malena is a great artist and had the best voice of all artists\u00a0in the finale of Eurovision Song Contest<\/a>\u00a0but what was the story in\u00a0the song?\u00a0\u00a0I heard the verses but\u00a0not\u00a0the lyrics of the\u00a0chorus because of the high notes that made it impossible even for a opera singer, used to sing that high, to sing the lyrics so\u00a0it was possible\u00a0hear the words.<\/p>\n

The sound mix of La voix<\/em> in the Semi Finale made it\u00a0hard to hear Malenas song. It was not easy to get the impression of a voice that in fact was bigger that all other competitor’s voices.<\/p>\n

When I saw the video of La voix<\/em> , sent to all 42 countries,\u00a0 it was not the original video from her victory of the Swedish National Selection.\u00a0Someone had\u00a0softened the contours.\u00a0There was too much light in it.\u00a0In\u00a0the performance\u00a0\u00a0of La voix during\u00a0the Semi Finale there was\u00a0even more light on the stage.\u00a0The whole stage\u00a0became white. Malena disappeared several times\u00a0because of\u00a0this strong light.<\/p>\n

Maybe the meaning of the light was to show that Malena sings like an angel and\u00a0that the\u00a0stage because of it became a heavenly place.? When I saw it I got serious doubts about\u00a0the chances of\u00a0the\u00a0song in the Finale.\u00a0 Maybe\u00a0the lights didn’t destroy for us who\u00a0know how charming\u00a0 and communicative Malena is, but for others in Europe for whom\u00a0the contact must happen\u00a0during those 3 minutes, I am sure that the strong white light did weaken\u00a0Malena’s chances.<\/p>\n

What was the idea of making the artist\u00a0dissappear? Was it to\u00a0 make a better contact between the artist and the audience? I don’t think so. On the contrary, it really made the artist something distant and unreachable.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The only way for an artist to touch hearts is to communicate with the audience as much as possible. Why was Malena not allowed to do this? Of course she can do it as an opera singer. To blaim the light technician for all this disturbing\u00a0white light \u00a0is not right, he just fullfulled the intention chosen in the softened La voix video.<\/p>\n

Here is \u00a0some\u00a0issues to think about for the jury that picks the songs for next year’s competition. Is there a story to tell? Do listeners hear the words loud and clear enough? How\u00a0can you\u00a0help the artist to communicate in the best way with people in 42 countries\u00a0and\u00a0avoid\u00a0making obstacles for the communication, how cool it even might\u00a0look for the audience in the big ESC Contest hall. Most people watch the competition on TV anyway and\u00a0 they want to see and hear the artist, to be able to connect and\u00a0become willing to vote for that particular song.<\/p>\n

Alexander Rybak chose another way. It was a pleasure to see his performance and his video without any disturbing lights, to see right into his eyes, to see him smile and hear him sing his heart out loud and clear. Also Yohanna<\/a> from Iceland did communicate with listeners in a magic way.\u00a0\u00a0She had also a story to tell. Her video was very communicative, too. Nothing did disturb the communication between her and her audience.<\/p>\n

I suggest that every song that is going to picked to compete in next Swedish National selection is a song that touches hearts. Check up the lyrics carefully and see if there is a story to tell.<\/p>\n

I also appeal to Christer Bj\u00f6rkman<\/a> and the others in the Swedish crew to make the video and plans for\u00a0the performance in a way that\u00a0makes the\u00a0artist go right through the TV screen by communicating\u00a0with the audience without disturbing lights and other obstacles. Let\u00a0the artist\u00a0make eye contact as much us possible.<\/p>\n

One of my favourites\u00a0was the Finnish song Lose control<\/em> by Waldo’s people<\/a>. It\u00a0became last in the Finale. I saw the Finnish Finale and\u00a0there was really\u00a0lots of energy and heat\u00a0on the stage\u00a0then they performed.<\/p>\n

I must say I was very suprised in a negative way when I saw the Loose control<\/a> video! It is a good thing to stand up for homeless people but why make such an depressive video, with the artist freezing to death outside in\u00a0the night, with eyes that\u00a0ni the end of the video couldn’t\u00a0see anything anymore. It is difficult to change the caracter of a song in a Semi Finale in 3 minutes when it has been sent to all 42 countries\u00a0with such a depressive video. \u00a0<\/p>\n

So, I give the same advice to Finland. Let the artists communicate with listeners in a positive way both on the video and on stage during the live performance.<\/p>\n

My congratulations to Norway and Iceland that became\u00a0number 1\u00a0and number 2 in the Finales of ESC 2009! We have a lot to learn from you.<\/p>\n
